Trump had a phone call with OpenAI's CEO last week to discuss AI infrastructure

Prior to his official inauguration as president, Trump had a lengthy conversation with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, discussing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and the need to develop the technology in the United States, according to people familiar with the matter. During Friday's conversation, Trump was particularly keen to push for AI to be built on American soil rather than in other countries, and explored what that might mean for job creation and public confidence during his administration. After being officially sworn in on Monday, Trump quickly began promoting the importance of AI. He announced a joint plan on Tuesday to partner with OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank to invest billions of dollars in U.S. AI infrastructure. OpenAI's involvement is notable because Altman is locked in a bitter legal battle with Musk, a Trump adviser and one of the main financial backers of his 2024 campaign, as well as the co-founder who founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit.
