Germany's Federal Office for Information Security advises the use of hardware wallets to counter the risk of cryptocurrency theft

Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) advises cryptocurrency users to use hardware wallets to protect their digital assets. BSI points out that hardware wallets, which can keep users' encryption keys in offline storage, are the safest way to store them. In contrast, storing assets on third-party platforms such as exchanges or using mobile phones and PCs for self-hosting poses significant security risks and is vulnerable to hackers. This recommendation comes against the backdrop of an increase in cryptocurrency theft. The cryptocurrency industry lost nearly $1.60 billion to attacks in the first half of 2024, including an increase in phishing attacks and ransomware. BSI emphasizes that the use of hardware wallets can effectively reduce these risks.
