CFTC partners with multiple parties to crack down on "romance scams and chive cutting" scams
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced on September 11, 2024 that it is partnering with multiple organizations to combat "romance scams and chive-cutting" scams in the cryptocurrency space. The CFTC's Office of Client Advocacy and Education (OCEO) will work with the American Bankers Association Foundation, private regulators, and other federal agencies to create and distribute infographics to help the public identify and avoid such scams.
In addition, the OCEO will work with the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and other organizations to develop investor alerts about "romance scams and chive cutting" scams. Melanie Devoe, OCEO director, said the partnerships are designed to spread educational messages and prevent fraud from harming the public.
