US Senator Urges Top 10 Bitcoin ATM Companies to Address Crypto Scams Targeting the Elderly
On September 15th, seven Democratic senators in the United States recently sent a letter to the 10 largest bitcoin ATM operators in the country, urging them to solve the problem of cryptocurrency fraud targeting the elderly in the United States. The letter was sent to Athena Bitcoin, Bitcoin Depot, Bitstop, Byte Federal, Cash2bitcoin, Coinflip, Coinhub, Margo, Rockitcoin and Unbank.
"We call on you to take immediate action to address the problem that Bitcoin ATMs (BTMs) are fueling widespread financial fraud against the elderly in the United States," the letter states. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin "have long been associated with criminal activity" and "the relative anonymity and irreversibility of cryptocurrency transactions make them particularly attractive to fraudsters," the lawmakers said.
The letter also cites data from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US FTC (FTC). From 2020 to 2023, losses from BTM scams skyrocketed from $12 million to $114 million. It added that the elderly were "more than three times more likely to report losses using BTM than younger people".
The senators asked the companies to take stronger measures to prevent fraud and ensure that their cryptocurrency ATMs are not misused, and asked the companies to respond by October 4 with details of the current measures.
