Republican lawmakers have sent a letter to the SEC chairperson urging the agency to clarify how it treats crypto airdrops

House Financial Services Committee Chairperson Patrick McHenry and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota sent a letter to Securities and Exchange Commission Chairperson Gary Gensler on Tuesday accusing the SEC of "meddling in internal affairs" and urging the agency to clarify how it treats cryptocurrency airdrops. "By barring Americans from participating in airdrops, the SEC is preventing cryptocurrency users from fully realizing the benefits of blockchain technology," wrote Emmer and McHenry. The pair asked Gensler a series of questions, including how the agency planned to distinguish airdrops from airline miles or credit card credits, and said they expected Gensler to respond by Sept. 30.
