South Korea fines Meta $15 million for collecting user data without consent
Meta Platforms (META. O) has ordered it to pay a fine of 21.62 billion won, or about $15.67 million, for collecting sensitive user data and providing it to advertisers without a legal basis, the country's Personal Information Protection Commission said in a statement on Tuesday. Meta collected information about about 980,000 South Korean Facebook users about issues such as religion, political views and sexual orientation without their consent. The information was then used by about 4,000 advertisers. "We found that Meta analysed users' behavioural data, such as the pages they liked on Facebook and the ads they clicked on, and created and managed ad themes related to sensitive information," the commission said.
