Informed sources: UK plans to pilot blockchain-based digital government bond issuance within two years

According to Bloomberg, the UK plans to start issuing digital gilts within the next two years, and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is expected to announce a pilot digital gilt issue in a speech at Mansion House in the City of London on Thursday. The Treasury is currently working on a timetable for the first digital gilt sale. The Debt Management Office said it is advising the government on the feasibility of issuing bonds via "distributed ledger technology" in its latest annual report.
