Bitfinex hacker Ilya Lichstan sentenced to 5 years for laundering 120,000 bitcoins
Ilya Lichstan was sentenced to five years in prison for her role in the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack and money laundering. The sentence was based on Lichstan's cooperation with the investigation authorities, and prosecutors recommended a reduced sentence. Lichstan and his wife Heather Morgan co-orchestrated the money laundering, using crypto mixers, tiered trading, dark web and other means to launder about 120,000 bitcoins, which were once worth as much as $72 million and have now reached $10.70 billion. Lichstan and Morgan pleaded guilty to related money laundering offences in August 2023. Morgan's sentence is scheduled for November 18, and prosecutors recommended that he be sentenced to 18 months.
