Mining company Marathon Digital pilots using bitcoin computing power to heat 11,000 Finnish residents
On June 22nd, bitcoin miner Marathon Digital Holdings announced a new 2 trillion watt (MW) pilot project designed to heat a community of 11,000 residents in Finland using the heat generated by bitcoin mining operations. The program is Marathon's first digital asset computing operation designed for a district heating solution.
The heart of the project is heating water in centralized locations and distributing it to local areas through underground pipes. Marathon is exploring ways to monetize its computing power by generating recycled heat rather than relying on fossil fuels.
