Romania Seizes $7 million From A Cryptocurrency Entrepreneur In Election Corruptive Practices Financing Investigation
In a Romanian investigation into the financing of election corruptive practices, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Bogdan Pežchir has been seized from his home with $7 million. Peschir has drawn attention for allegedly sending $381,000 to various TikTok accounts that have been promoting Romanian presidential frontrunner Cælin Georgescu.
Georgescu, a far-right, pro-Russian independent, burst onto Romania's political scene just weeks before the first round of voting in late November. Some 25,000 TikTok accounts, totaling 8 million followers, were suddenly devoted to promoting the unknown anti-NATO engineer.
Further questions have been raised about Pežchir's ties to the cryptocurrency industry. His business dealings include working with BitXATM, a Romanian crypto ATM company that was hit by a theft scandal in 2016. The company's founder, Gabrial Prodanescu, charged a former employee with the crime. Pežchir later testified at trial, and the man was eventually convicted.
