Trump advisers are said to be considering how to reshape the Fed's leadership

Advisers to US President-elect Donald Trump are considering how to reshape the Fed's leadership, including naming Fed governor Jerome Bowman as the Fed's next vice-chairperson for regulation, according to people familiar with the matter. The move comes after Michael Barr announced on Monday that he would step down as vice-chairperson for regulation while retaining his seat on the Fed's board of governors. At the same time, advisers have also begun drawing up a list of possible replacements for Chairperson Jerome Powell, whose term ends in May 2026. While Trump chose Powell as chairperson in his first term, he has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. According to people familiar with the matter, Trump's advisers are currently considering candidates to replace Powell: Kevin Hassett, who will become director of the White House National Economic Council; Larry Lindsey and Mark Summerlin, former Bush administration officials; David Malpass, former World Bank president; and Kevin Walsh and Bowman, former Federal Reserve officials.
