US regulator fines Block and Cash $80 million
In a coordinated enforcement action by financial regulators in 48 U.S. states, Block, Inc. will pay a $80 million fine and take corrective action to correct violations of the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws that protect the financial system from illegal use.
More than 50 million consumers use Block's mobile payment service, Cash App, to spend, send money, store and invest. In the cross-state settlement signed this week, Block agreed to pay fines to state government entities, engage independent consultants to review the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of its BSA/AML program, and submit a report to states within nine months. Once the report is submitted, Block will have 12 months to correct any vulnerabilities identified in the review.
