US Senator Lummis: Whistleblower Claims FDIC Digital Asset-Related Documents Were Destroyed

On January 17, pro-cryptocurrency Senator Cynthia Lummis said that if the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) destroys materials related to digital assets, it will face criminal consequences. In a letter sent to FDIC Chairperson Martin Gruenberg on Thursday, the Wyoming Republican senator said that the FDIC's whistleblowers reported to her allegations that the documents were destroyed, and said that these whistleblowers are "being closely monitored by management" in case they report to the Senate, suggesting that legal action will be taken. "The FDIC's alleged destruction and concealment of material related to Operation Chokepoint 2.0 with the intent to impede the oversight function of the United States Senate is not only unacceptable, it is also illegal," Mr. Loomis said in a statement. "If someone within the FDIC is found to have intentionally destroyed material or attempted to impede the oversight function of the Senate, a criminal referral will be made promptly to the Department of Justice."
