Public Citizen, a non-profit organization, questions the risk of foreign payments from TRUMP
Public Citizen, a government, business, and consumer watchdog, has called for a federal investigation into whether Trump violated laws banning gift solicitation by launching Meme, raising concerns about the existence of untraceable foreign payments.
Public Citizen filed a formal complaint Wednesday with the Justice Department and the Office of Government Ethics, alleging that Trump's social media posts were used to promote the TRUMP token after taking office in January. The Justice Department, the Office of Government Ethics and Public Citizen did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Bartlett Naylor and Craig Holman of Public Citizen wrote in the complaint that Mr. Trump appeared to be "demanding money without compensation, that is, a gift that benefits him personally". The complaint cited a number of legal issues surrounding Mr. Trump's promotion of Meme, covering overlapping areas of federal law, constitutional provisions and ethics.
