Musk DOGE attempts to obtain taxpayer data
The Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), led by Musk, is seeking access to the IRS system, which includes detailed financial information for every taxpayer, business and non-profit organization in the United States, according to two people familiar with the matter, causing deep concern within the IRS. Under pressure from the White House, the IRS is considering signing a memorandum of understanding that would allow Department of Government Effectiveness officials broad access to the tax agency's systems, property and data sets. These include the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), which gives tax agency employees access to IRS accounts (including personal identification numbers) and bank information. It is unclear whether Acting IRS Commissioner O'Donnell or other IRS or Treasury officials approved DOGE to gain access to the IDRS system. (Kim Ten)
