UN Assistant Secretary-General: Proposal to explore how cryptocurrencies can advance human development

On February 18, UN Assistant Secretary-General Kanny Wignaraja issued a call to explore how cryptocurrencies, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and stablecoins can advance human development. Noting that Bitcoin and Ethereum as alternative investments peaked at $3.90 trillion in December, Wignaraja suggested investigating whether some of the funds could be used to support education, healthcare, skills development and job creation. She stressed that digital currencies need to support development while safeguarding financial stability, and suggested that development organizations test cryptocurrency funds under strict regulation. In addition, she said that the transparency of blockchain can help strengthen accountability and curb corruption, and suggested that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) assist countries in establishing a regulatory framework for CBDC. However, she also acknowledged that the use of digital currencies in sovereign bonds and workouts remains uncertain, and their volatility remains a major obstacle to large-scale institutional investment.
