Coinbase Releases US Legislative Wish List
Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States and one of the industry's major political donors, outlined its legislative priorities on Wednesday after spending hundreds of millions of dollars to help Republicans win control of Washington in 2024.
The blueprint, originally reported by Semafor, could become a roadmap for influence in Washington as the industry transitions from being a regulatory target under the Biden administration to one embraced under President Trump.
One of the major changes proposed by Coinbase is to transfer the supervision of cryptocurrency spot trading to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as the firm considers bitcoin, ethereum, and other similar digital assets to be commodities rather than securities, a view challenged by the Democratic-led Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). This would revolutionize the current way the agency regulates the nearly 3.30 trillion dollar market.
