U.S. consumer confidence plunged, with key indicators posting the largest decline since 2021

US consumer confidence fell this month by the most since August 2021 amid concerns about the outlook for the broader economy and uncertainty over the Trump administration's policies. The Conference Board's February confidence index fell seven points to 98.3 on Tuesday, its third straight monthly decline. A measure of expectations over the next six months also recorded its biggest drop in three-and-a-half years, although the decline in the status quo indicator was more modest. Residents and companies of all sizes are now more cautious, and appear to be particularly nervous about returning inflationary pressures, tariffs and a cooling labor market.
