Illinois senator proposes bill to regulate cryptocurrency ATMs nationwide

Once touted as a convenient tool for hobbyists, cryptocurrency ATMs are now being exploited by scammers, costing victims (many of whom are the elderly) huge financial losses. In response, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin has introduced the Crypto ATM Fraud Prevention Act, which seeks to stem the tide of fraud associated with these machines by implementing new regulations. The legislation, announced Tuesday, would place strict trading limits on cryptocurrency ATMs and require companies to offer full refunds to victims who report fraud within 30 days of the transaction. "These measures are common-sense red lines that will prevent countless Americans, especially the elderly, from losing thousands of dollars of their hard-earned money to criminal scams," Dublin urged his colleagues in the Senate to pass the bill into law.
