OpenAI plans to become a for-profit company similar to Anthropic and xAI, or pave the way for an IPO
According to people familiar with the matter, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently told some shareholders that the company is considering changing its management structure to become a for-profit company similar to rivals Anthropic and xAI, and reducing its association with the nonprofit parent company. Before Microsoft's investment, OpenAI's nonprofit organization contributed more capital than other shareholders. Such a change could open the door to OpenAI's eventual IPO, which is currently valued at $86 billion.
It would also give Altman the chance to take a stake in the company, a move some investors are pushing. Last year, OpenAI employees sold more than $800 million worth of stock.
