Lawyers for the SEC objected to
Coinbase's subpoena request, which sought to search "essentially all crypto-related documents," which the SEC called breathtakingly broad.
The court filing on Monday is the latest development in an ongoing legal battle between the SEC and
Coinbase. Coinbase seeks to subpoena the SEC and its employees, including Chairperson Gary Gensler, for communications and other records that could help Coinbase defend itself in an upcoming trial against the SEC.
It is reported that the SEC filed a civil lawsuit against Coinbase last year, accusing it of operating as an unregistered stock exchange, broker and clearing house. The SEC also accused Coinbase of selling securities related to its equity products without registration.
