South Korean government officials accused of embezzling about $440,000 to buy cryptocurrency
On August 16, according to Yonhap News Agency, the Cheongju District Prosecutors Office of South Korea said on the 13th that a government official of the Cheongju municipal government responsible for supervising student work arrangements and support projects for North Korean defectors who settled in Cheongju had embezzled 600 million won (about 440,000 US dollars) of public funds and invested in cryptocurrency through forging various official documents for about seven years from January 2017. The prosecutor's office has arrested and prosecuted him on charges of embezzlement and forgery of official documents. A spokesperson for the Cheongju District Prosecutors Office said they have seized property and assets, including apartments and vehicles, in an attempt to recover the funds. The prosecutors said they intend to fully file a case so that the defendants can be sentenced to penalties commensurate with their crimes.
