Crypto miner BIT Mining paid $4 million to Securities Exchange Commission for allegedly bribing Japanese officials

The Securities Exchange Commission said Monday that cryptocurrency miner BIT Mining has agreed to pay a $4 million fine to settle the commission's allegations that it was involved in a scheme to bribe Japanese officials. The Securities Exchange Commission alleged that BIT Mining Ltd. (formerly known as 500.com Limited) paid $2.50 million in cash bribes and gifts between 2017 and 2019, including to Japanese lawmakers, in an attempt to win a bid to open a casino resort in Japan. In a parallel action, the Justice Department said it had reached an agreement in which BIT Mining agreed to pay a criminal penalty of $10 million, of which $4 million would be paid by the company to the Securities Exchange Commission.
