Congressman French Hill promises to investigate "Operation ChokePoint 2.0"

On December 3rd, US Congressman French Hill publicly committed to investigating "Operation Chokepoint 2.0", which is accused of denying specific industries such as cryptocurrencies access to financial services for political purposes. Hill said that the Financial Institution Group should not terminate customer accounts without a valid, substantive reason, characterizing such actions as weaponizing government resources. Stressing the importance of fairness and transparency in financial regulation, he said such practices are detrimental to legitimate businesses. In his recent posts from social media, he denounced the Biden-Harris administration for its continued adoption of these practices, noting that it echoes the original "Operation Chokepoint." He announced his intention to push the Legislature to review the actions and policies of regulators to determine whether the latter is adhering to legal standards. In addition, Hill also expressed a strong position, vowing to eliminate political targeting in financial regulation. Hill emphasised the importance of institution-specific financial regulation as part of his broad reform programme. He suggested requiring federal prudential regulators to consider factors such as size, risk profile and business models when implementing policy. Such an approach would prevent one-size-fits-all regulation and ensure smaller community banks and credit unions are not unfairly burdened.
