Japanese chip stocks fell collectively due to the impact of DeepSeek

On January 27th, according to Bloomberg, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek released a competitive AI model, raising concerns about its threat to the US technology leadership, and Japanese chip stocks fell sharply. Nvidia supplier Advantest fell 8.2%, Disco Corp fell 2.9%, SoftBank Group fell 5.4%, and data center cable makers Furukawa Electric and Fujikura Ltd both fell more than 8%. Market participants pointed out that the huge investment returns of large technology companies in the AI field are questionable, and DeepSeek may be a key factor in triggering a correction in technology stocks.
