ZachXBT: Coinbase users lost at least $150 million to scams in past year
According to BeInCrypto, blockchain investigator ZachXBT has revealed that Coinbase users have lost at least $150 million to social scams in the past year, with cases he independently confirmed alone reaching that amount.
In the latest case, a user was scammed out of 110 cbBTC (worth $11.50 million) on the Base network. Attackers used instant exchanges to quickly launder funds, making tracking and recovery nearly impossible through cross-platform exchanges and bridging operations.
ZachXBT pointed out that such scams are usually carried out by impersonating Coinbase customer service, including phishing emails, fake phone calls, etc., to trick users into revealing private keys or account info. Once successful, the attacker will immediately transfer and take control of the funds. In addition, ZachXBT criticized Coinbase for failing to effectively assist victims, and pointed out that its leadership failed to face up to security threats.
