Trump: Japan can no longer let the yen depreciate, it's not fair to the United States
U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that he told Japanese leaders that they cannot continue to devalue their currency because it would be unfair to the United States.
We can't do that because it's not fair to us, Mr. Trump said. It's hard to make tractors here when Japan and other places are depressing their currencies.
Asked about Trump's remarks, Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato said Tokyo had not adopted a policy directly aimed at weakening the yen. Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, Katsunobu Kato said Japan had confirmed its "basic stance on exchange rate policy" with the G7 and the United States, including in a bilateral meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Vincent Bescent.
