California shut down 26 cryptocurrency scam websites last year
According to Decrypt, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) has shut down 26 fraudulent cryptocurrency websites in 2024, causing consumers to lose more than $4.60 million in 2024.
DFPI handled more than 2,600 complaints through its "Crypto Scam Tracker", exposing seven new types of scams including fake bitcoin mining, cryptocurrency job scams, and crypto game scams, as well as misleading artificial intelligence investment schemes.
Meanwhile, the California Department of Justice (DOJ) said it had shut down 42 websites operated by international scammers, finding $6.50 million in losses for promising high returns.
