A California man has been sentenced to 87 months in prison for his involvement in bitcoin money laundering

John Khuu, a 29-year-old man from San Francisco, California, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transfer business, Decrypt reported. According to Texas State Police, Khuu's business imported MDMA from Germany and sold it on multiple dark web marketplaces, accepting bitcoin payments. Kuo then allegedly exchanged the bitcoins stored in the seller's account for US dollars and laundered the dirty money through hundreds of transactions and dozens of financial accounts. The man was also separately indicted in the Northern District of California for illegally importing a Class I controlled substance. The arrest of the man is part of the OperationCryptoRunner, which is part of a multi-year joint investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ), the United States Secret Service (USSS) and the Postal Inspection Service (PIS) announced since November 2022.
