House Speaker calls on Biden to resign "immediately"
After Biden announced his withdrawal, Johnson, the Republican speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, called on Biden to resign "immediately". "If Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president," Johnson said in a statement. "He must resign from the presidency immediately." Johnson said that more than 14 million Americans chose Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate, but the party that calls itself "the Democratic Party" declared their vote invalid. As speaker of the House, Johnson is second in the order of presidential succession, after Harris.
Asked about calls from some congressional Republicans for Mr. Biden to resign, the White House said he "looks forward to completing his term". In a statement, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell similarly accused Democrats of "attempting to subvert the will of the American people as expressed in the national primaries", but stopped short of calling for Mr. Biden to resign.
