Yuga.eth, a senior software engineer at
Coinbase, said in a social media post that neoliberals should be advocates of neoliberalism, and that open markets are the foundation of prosperity. Cryptocurrency is an essentially neoliberal (and liberal) technology: it enables individuals to store value and trade without a central intermediary. Therefore, the attitude they show is meaningless.
In an era of increasing instability in the dollar-based global monetary order, it is critical for the United States to develop a strategy to engage with Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. These new forms of money are not going away. In fact, with the advent of stablecoins, they represent a new avenue for the United States to increase the influence of the dollar as a reserve currency. Cryptocurrencies offer many technical advantages over traditional payment systems, and the United States should take this development seriously.
"I understand the perception that cryptocurrencies are seen as speculation, both because of misinformation spread by opponents and because of legitimate problems within the industry. But the full-blown hostility shown here is not in line with an organisation that claims to support individual rights and free markets."
