OpenAI co-creator John Schulman: Personal decision to leave the OpenAI department and return to practical technical work
On August 6th, John Schulman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, said in a post on X that it was a difficult decision to leave OpenAI. This choice stemmed from his desire to study artificial intelligence alignment (AI alignment) in depth, return to practical technical work, and believe that Anthropic can gain a new perspective.
"My decision was a personal one," said Schulman, who said he was leaving not because OpenAI lacked support for alignment research, but because company leaders had been committed to investing in the field. Earlier today, it was reported that John Schulman had defected to Anthropic, a competitor company founded by former OpenAI researchers.
