Australian prosecutors are advocating jail time for users who received large and erroneous refunds from Crypto com
Australian prosecutors are advocating a jail term for a Crypto com user who accidentally received a mistaken refund of nearly $7 million and spent most of it before the trading platform discovered an internal error three years ago.
In May 2021, Cryptocom sent Australian couple Thevamanogari Manivel and Jatinder Singh $6.86 million (AUD 10.47 million) instead of a $100 refund for an employee allegedly entering an account number in the payment section of an Excel spreadsheet.
However, the trading platform detected a mismatch between the bank account and the exchange account. As a result, the trading platform issued a refund, but instead of refunding the AUD 100 the couple tried to deposit, the trading platform mistakenly wired 10.50 million AUD to Maniville's bank account.
Just seven months later, when the trading platform discovered the error in an internal audit in December 2021, Mr. Singh had bought multiple homes and given away 1 million Australian dollars to friends. He claimed he thought he had won an "online lottery".
