California financial regulator warns of 7 new cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence scams

A California financial regulator says that in 2024, users reported seven new types of cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence scams through thousands of complaints, which had never been seen before. The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) said in a statement on March 10 that the department received 2,668 complaints in 2024 and found seven types of scams they had not yet documented, such as fake bitcoins, mining schemes, where scammers offer fake mining investments. The DFPI has also received complaints about fake cryptocurrency game schemes in which users are encouraged to deposit funds but their wallets are emptied; and scammers offering fake jobs asking victims to transfer cryptocurrencies and provide private information.
